Coexistence is a sculpture composed of five different sections to create the illusion of intrusion within a space. The sculpted pieces vary in size however once installed they measure four feet in length, five feet in width, and eight feet in height. The skeleton of the piece was made using wire threading to control both strength and flexibility while the body was constructed using Papier Mache techniques to acquire both perfect mass and durability. On the other hand, certain aspects were carved out of foam to form the stylized head of a snake and accented with hues of blue acrylic paint while the body is adorned with iridescent scales that mimic the sheen of water under the radiance of the sun which seems to draw attention to its color changing transitions complemented by the ambient light of its surroundings.
It is an interactive installation meant to portray the current state of society, living in a man-made structure without a single trace of nature’s touch. It is inspired by the view of Colorado’s mountain range, viewing the river as it makes its way through nature, a scenery that mimics a snake slithering downhill through the mountains. It is an attempt to emphasize the beauty of what the world can offer, and the wonders nature brings to those who witness it outside of concrete floors. Consequently, Coexistence is meant to fit any space that exudes today’s society to fully capture its message and to appreciate something that we cannot feel while living in this modern world, nature.
